Convening the Community
Community Research Center for Reliable AI (CR4AI) is established at Northeastern Oakland in November 2025, under the leadership of Dr. Alexy Khrabrov, who joins Northeastern as an Adjunct Research Scientist.
CR4AI is created with a belief that in order to build AI that works for all, you need a diverse and interwoven community building, testing, and using it. We bring together eight key constituencies:
- Academia
- Startups
- Enterprises
- Public Sector and Long-Term projects in industry
- Government
- Open-Source Communities
- Non-profit foundations
- Art creators and collectives
We consider AI Reliability broadly, to encompass AI systems that
- Do what we want them to do, and do it well (high performance)
- Are verifiable, testable, explainable, benchmarkable
- Are responsible, ethical, and safe. We see ethics as a component of reliability expressable as code.
Among specific directions of primary interest to Northeastern are
- Embodied/Physical AI
- AI in Engineering (beyond AI Engineering, transforming Engineering itself)
- AI for National Security (economic, informational, etc.)
- AI in Art, Creativity and Humanities
CR4AI will work with students to bring industry leaders to them, with engaging topics and mentorship for capstone projects, practicums, and coops.
We plan to align with partners in each of the categories above. Industry partners will fund some of the research and collaborations.
