CR4AI Begins at AI By the Bay 2025

At the opening of AI By the Bay 2025, Alexy Khrabrov, Ph.D., Founder and Organizer of AI By the Bay conferences and Bay Area AI meetups, and Dr. Bethany Edmunds, the Associate Dean for West Coast, Northeastern University, announced the establishment of the Community Research Center for Reliable AI at Northeastern Oakland (abbreviated as CR4AI).

The Center establishes a permanent home for the diverse and thriving AI community of developers, researchers, startup founders, enterprise leaders, government officials, public sector visionaries, artists, creators, and humanists, coming together to make AI reliably work for all.

CR4AI will have specific focus areas aligned with the goals of the global Northeastern University community and Open-Source AI research directions most promising for achieving AI reliability. They include

AI for Engineering. Engineering is becoming AI-native. But you cannot vibe-engineer a bridge as you can vibe-code a program. We need to integrate reliability metrics and certify both AI and humans engineering with it.
Physical and Embodied AI. Overlapping with the above, robots operate in the physical world with a much narrower margin of error. They need new research for making them reliable.
AI for National Security. Employing software, sensors, robots, and requiring both AI Engineering and Engineering with AI, this focus area covers both trust, reliability, and real-time decisions under uncertainty, with high cost of error both for action and inaction. We will work with experts such as General Barns, the former Chief AI Ethics Officer of the US Army, on making Ethics and integral part of AI Reliability.
Art for AI. As a Community Research Center founded in Oakland, home for a diverse and vibrant community of creators, we all struggle to find a resilient place for human soul in AI and a way for humans to lead AI creation with their hearts and minds. True to the idea of the University, we will bring a multidisciplinary approach of Art, Rethorics and all of Humanities to understanding and guiding AI that works for all.
